This is the classical Mediterranean olive-tree growing system, characterized by wide spacing between the trees, 10 to 12 meters (32 - 39 ft.) apart, with densities of around 100 feets per hectare (2.5 ac.), usually bushy-vase shaped, double or triple trunk trees. Because o fits difficult mechanization and the lower production, the cost of obtaining one kilogram (2.2 lbs.) of olive oil in traditional plantation is 60-80% higher than the oil obtainer from high-density olive groves (intensive and hedge-row).
