The Gut–Brain Connection: How Olive Oil Supports Both

A recent scientific review published in Foods suggests that extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) may be even more influential than once believed in maintaining a healthy gut microbiota—an essential factor for overall wellbeing.

The gut microbiota includes a vast community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea that help metabolize nutrients, drugs, and toxins, and produce essential vitamins. It also supports immune function, strengthens the intestinal barrier, and influences conditions such as allergies, bowel diseases, metabolic syndrome, and neurodegenerative disorders.

The review examined the role of EVOO’s bioactive compounds—particularly polyphenols, secoiridoids, and triterpenes—which, despite making up less than 2% of the oil, have powerful effects. These compounds can reduce inflammation, protect blood vessels, regulate metabolism, and benefit both brain and immune function. Our Vezorla Picual Early Harvest Spanish olive oil is naturally very rich in these bioactive compounds, thanks to careful cultivation in our family groves in Cazorla, Andalusia, and early harvesting to preserve maximum polyphenol content.

Analyzing hundreds of studies, including lab, animal, and human trials, the researchers found that these compounds boost beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, while inhibiting harmful microbes. They also stimulate the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), vital for nourishing colon cells, reducing inflammation, and preserving the intestinal barrier—often referred to as the body’s “protective shield.”

The findings also suggest benefits for cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurological health through the gut–microbiota–brain axis. However, the authors emphasized the need for more standardized human studies and consideration of individual factors like diet, genetics, and health status to ensure consistent and reliable results

Ultimately, the researchers conclude that with deeper understanding and standardization, EVOO’s bioactives could be fully harnessed for preventing and managing a range of gut, metabolic, inflammatory, and brain-related disorders.
